Kirsten Dunst Urges Tobey Maguire to Return as Spider-Man to Explore Peter Parker’s Romance With Mary Jane in a Different Kind of Superhero Movie

Kirsten Dunst’s latest remarks along with Sam Raimi’s reported interest may hint at Spider-Man 4 potentially happening.

Kirsten Dunst was too honest when she admitted that money was part of the reason why she appeared in Spider-Man in 2002. While she claimed money was the reason actors mostly took up superhero projects, she also believed Sam Raimi’s movie was very different from modern superhero films. She felt that Raimi’s movies were indie films disguised as superhero films, which is what she would want if another Spider-Man movie were made.

Dunst would have loved to return to Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tobey Maguire, just to revisit the relationship between Mary Jane and Peter Parker. It appears that the Melancholia actress is ready to return to a fourth Spider-Man film, something Raimi has already expressed interest in making.

Kirsten Dunst has been giving powerhouse performances in her recent ventures. Her role as a depressed mom in The Power of the Dog in 2021 earned her an Oscar nomination. Dunst’s most recent film Civil War has received great word-of-mouth after its premiere at the SXSW festival. Dunst has no plan to end the success streak, as she already may have ideas about which projects to work on and which ones not.
During an interview with GQ magazine, Dunst shared that she wouldn’t go down the path of The Power of the Dog kind of roles any time soon. She did not hold back her opinions about superhero films either as she revealed that she and many other actors did them for the money. However, she also added that Sam Raimi‘s films were nothing like modern comic-book movies.

The Virgin Suicides actress also shared that she would’ve loved to return to Spider-Man: No Way Home, but she had a different idea about how the movie would’ve revisited Mary Jane and Peter Parker’s romance. She wanted it to be an indie-style superhero film, just like the film Chronicle. The 2012 film explores the story of three friends who gain superpowers and one of them goes down the dark path. Dunst shared with GQ:

“It would be funny to be like, OK, let’s take Tobey [Maguire] and I and do it in a weird indie way where it’s like a different kind of superhero film. Like how they did that movie Chronicle. It could be cool.”

Dunst’s new idea may even bring Tobey Maguire on board for a fourth Spider-Man film, which Sam Raimi has long vied for. Besides the Spider-Man film, Dunst also shared that people wanted her to make another film in the Bring It On franchise and added that she even talked to director Peyton Reed about the film.

A fourth Spider-Man film was supposed to come out from the Tobey Maguire-led trilogy, but Sam Raimi chose to walk away from the film. The Doctor Strange 2 director couldn’t meet Sony’s planned release date for the film, forcing him to make such a decision. However, he wants to make up for it by doing a Spider-Man 4 a decade later.

When a fan asked about Spider-Man 4 at the recently concluded Monster-Mania Con in New Jersey, Raimi had a positive update to share. He shared that there are chances of the film happening because of his deep desire for the project. He added that the film will happen at the right time. He told the fan (via @SamRaimiUpdates | X):

“He told me that there are chances of this happening simply because he has the same desire as we do. But if it is to happen, it will be at the right time.”

Kirsten Dunst’s interest has made the chances even more favorable to the franchise. While fans await further updates on a potential Spider-Man 4, the first three films in the trilogy are now available for streaming on Disney+.
