The Colorado QB is touted to be the best quarterback this year but if the Buffaloes are to make the playoffs this year, he’ll have to depend on the overall team’s performance rather than do it all himself. Shedeur Sanders has a fantastic ability to handle pressure in the tight pockets, something which he did phenomenally well last year despite being sacked a record 45 times. This season, he will have to derive skills from his idol and the GOAT of the NFL, Tom Brady, to ensure grand success for the team.
Shedeur Sanders will be the supposed hero against the team’s rivals, North Dakota State. The season-opening game will be held on Thursday, August 29th will air on ESPN, and will kick off the 2024 season under Coach Prime. The stage is set for an outstanding battle, but what does Shedeur need to do to ensure a win comes from his hand? This is what Matt McChesney had to advise the Buffaloes and how Shedeur needs to take a page out of Brady’s performance to try and not do everything by himself.
Matt McChesney says Shedeur needs support
On the 17th July episode of the Zero 2 Sixty Podcast, Matt McChesney was invited on to the show and he was seen breaking down Colorado’s keys to victory against North Dakota State. He later went on to commend Shedeur Sanders’ talents and even called him the best QB this year. But will his 2023 performance be enough to land Colorado a CFP spot? As per the former Buffs’ guard, there’s a lot more yet to be done.
Matt McChesney talked about how North Dakota won’t be able to keep up with the receivers in Colorado, which will give Shedeur the advantage that he needs to make exceptional passes. He said, “North Dakota State, for as good as they are, I don’t think they’re going to have the horses to run with our skill guys especially our Colorado receivers. So if we can protect, which we better be able to against North Dakota State, Shedeur should be able to slice.” He further went on to emphasize Tom Brady’s final season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and said, “Tom Brady, every time he was excellent, which is every time, he had a great running game the year that he led the league in passing. His last year in the league, his running game was dogs*** and they barely made the playoffs. They had a losing record because he had to do everything. I don’t necessarily want Shedeur to do everything but he’s got to be supported.” Thus, the running game of Shedeur needs to be better than the 2023 season and he needs to have the proper protection from his team to maximize his potential as a quarterback like Brady once was. After all, it was Colorado’s poor defense last year that made him the most sacked QB, 52 times to be exact. With all that said, here’s a look at what advice Brady has for Shedeur since the two share such a close relationship.
Tom Brady’s advice for Shedeur Sanders as a mentor
Back in the last season, Tom Brady was seen mentoring Shedeur as a quarterback, along with his father, Deion Sanders. Though their practice sessions together were limited, the two were reported to have a lot of back-and-forth text messages about football and how to be an elite athlete overall. Shedeur could very well go on to be a generational talent like Brady someday but as far as his career is considered at the moment, he’s not a “finished product” yet.
Tom Brady said that Shedeur has a lot of room to grow and said, “He’s still a young man, he’s still got so much opportunity to grow as long as he stays really continuing the pursuit of learning. This game and sports are never, you’re never a finished product. And I love seeing, you know, a younger version of that to who’s very, very inspiring to a lot of people right now.” With the support of the 7-time Super Bowl champion behind him and the millions of Buffs’ fans hoping a lot from him, Shedeur Sanders is riding on a wave of expectations and if things pan out for the team well, he might just stand tall on the stage of glory.
