The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time is hiding a secret that makes the infamous Water Temple so much easier, it’s handy for the rest of the game too.

When The Legend Of Zelda series made the jump to 3D, it was an absolute game-changer, as while the games that came out before it were fantastic in their own right, the series really came into its own on the Nintendo 64.

While it could be argued Zelda: Ocarina Of Time was a bit too formulaic of an adventure, with most of the game’s items only being useful for the dungeon you find them in, it still stands as one of the greatest games of all time.

That is, until you get to the Water Temple. It’s nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be but it’s not exactly fun either. I don’t think there’s any way you can spin a flooded temple that has you moving slower than molasses and make it sound like a good time.

That said, there’s a neat little trick you can perform in the temple, as well as other parts of the game, that make the rigorous platforming segments a bit easier – and it’s linked to Ice Arrows.

While they had better uses in future games, the Ice Arrows in Ocarina Of Time can do more than just freeze enemies, they can freeze Blade Traps as well.

Blade Traps are the unbreakable spiked things that move along a set path in the temples and overworld, designed to make getting through the game a bit more precarious.

Turns out, sniping them with an Ice Arrows freezes them in place, making them easier to get past, very helpful for the Water Temple as there are quite a few of them – especially on the final run to the boss.

Over 25 years later and we’re still learning something new, Zelda: Ocarina Of Time was truly ahead of its…time.
