Jay-Z is now JAŸ-Z — at least for the time being.
The hip-hop mogul has modified his stage name to include an umlaut over the “Y.”
The change was first seen in an announcement on Tuesday that revealed that the rapper would perform with The Roots at their Philadelphia music festival in May. JAŸ-Z’s name on streaming platforms like Spotify and YouTube has also since been amended to include the punctuation.
For context, a umlaut is a punctuation mark consisting of two dots that is placed over a vowel in German and other languages to signal a change in sound.
So, why did the “99 Problems” rapper quietly add the umlaut to his name? He appears to be reviving a stylistic choice from three decades ago.
The punctuation mark serves as a tribute to his 1996 debut album, “Reasonable Doubt,“ which featured the same umlaut on its cover art. This year marks the album’s 30th anniversary.
The modification continues a pattern of name changes throughout JAŸ-Z’s career. In 2013, he nixed the hyphen from his name entirely before reinstating it in capital letters in 2017. For his “4:44” album, he formatted his moniker as JAY:Z with a colon.
JAŸ-Z will headline the Roots Picnic 2026, performing alongside The Roots on May 30 at Philadelphia’s Belmont Plateau. This concert marks the rapper’s first stage performance in nearly a year and his first collaboration with The Roots in over a decade. Tickets are available here.
