Series creator Debora Cahn said the creators “haven’t figured” out what will happen in Season 4 of “The Diplomat” but are “having a good time trying.”
Netflix amped up the political drama in Season 3 of “The Diplomat” but they are not done with the series renewed for another season.
Season 3 of the political thriller picked up right where Season 2 ended with the death of President Rayburn (Michael McKean) and Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney), described as “a terribly flawed woman,” now the commander in chief.
While Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) accused Penn of “hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she’s after the VP’s job,” her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) “may have inadvertently killed him,” according to the series synopsis. However, that doesn’t curb Hal’s push to land Kate the vice presidency, and “Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected.” At the same time, cracks begin to emerge in the couple’s marriage, and they choose “public marriage and private divorce,” with Kate staying on as ambassador to the U.K. and Hal, as Grace’s VP.
“It’s the marriage of two countries and the marriage of these people, and it’s hard to keep both going,” series creator and executive producer Debora Cahn told USA TODAY in an exclusive interview. “I really wanted to just spend some time with both of them and find where the cracks are in each relationship.”
On the political front, the crises get bigger as the U.S. steals a weapon of mass destruction from Russia.
“We spend a lot of time in the writers room asking” how to up the ante for each new season, Cahn said. “We don’t want to just keep ratcheting things up, but we do want to honestly look at what are the stakes of the decisions that get made in these rooms. And it turns out they’re big.”
Will there be ‘The Diplomat’ Season 4?
Yes. Netflix, on Thursday, Oct. 16, announced “The Diplomat” would be returning for a Season 4. A Netflix spokesperson also confirmed the same to USA TODAY.
Though the creators have not hinted which direction the upcoming season would take, Cahn said the creators themselves “haven’t figured” out yet what will happen in Season 4 but are “having a really good time trying.”
However, Cahn warned viewers the new season would have “plenty” of things to worry about.
Fans “should be worried. There’s plenty to worry about,” Cahn told Tudum. “It can be pretty chilling when you see who takes power and get the sense that they may be horrifically misusing it.”
When will Season 4 of ‘The Diplomat’ come out?
Netflix has not yet announced when Season 4 would release. However, the streaming platform revealed on Tudum that the new season begins production this fall.
Season 1 of “The Diplomat” premiered on April 20, 2023, while Season 2 released on Oct. 31, 2024. Season 3 arrived a year later on Oct. 16, 2025. Considering the upcoming season is going into production soon and if Netflix follows the same timeline, fans can expect Season 4 to release in October of next year.
‘The Diplomat’ Season 4 cast
Viewers can expect most Season 3 cast members to return for the next season, including Janney and Whitford, who will be returning as series regulars, according to Tudum.
