Snoop Dogg has hit back at the controversy surrounding next year’s Super Bowl halftime show, seemingly aiming some choice words at chief critic Lil Wayne.
During his Drink Champs interview alongside Dr. Dre, Tha Doggfather was asked about the backlash to the announcement that Kendrick Lamar will perform at the big game in New Orleans in February — specifically the belief that the halftime show should go to an act from the host city.
“What we need to think about is that before JAY-Z got control of the Super Bowl, wasn’t no n-ggas performing,” Snoop said. “He’s creating a wave of artists that have an opportunity to perform. If you’re a great artist, your time will come.”
“I was never crying about it or mad about it. When Dr. Dre called me and asked me to get his back, I was there for him. But I didn’t feel like I was supposed to be there or in demand to be there,” he added, referencing Dre’s star-studded 2022 set in L.A. that also included Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige and special guest 50 Cent.
“This is a big event; people look at everything when they pick the person to perform. You should just be honored that Hip Hop is being able to be seen on that platform, for all of us, and not hate on the next man, but be happy.”
Snoop Dogg’s strong comments appear to reference Lil Wayne’s response to being overlooked for the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show in his hometown, a gig he had openly coveted.
In a video uploaded to Instagram in September, the Young Money legend expressed his disappointment at the perceived snub, admitting he was “hurt” and left feeling “broken.”
“I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown, and for automatically mentally putting myself in that position like somebody told me that was my position,” he said.
“But I thought there was nothing better than that spot and that stage and that platform in my city, so it hurt. It hurt a whole lot.”
Kendrick Lamar later addressed the uproar on his recent album GNX, rapping: “Used to bump ‘Tha Carter 3,’ I held my Rollie chain proud / Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down.”
He also spit: “Won the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me / All these n-ggas agitated, I’m just glad they showed they faces / Quite frankly, plenty artists but they outdated / Old-ass flows, tryna convince me that you they favorite.”
Weezy did not take kindly to the lyrics, firing back on X (formerly Twitter): “Man wtf I do?! I just be chillin & dey still kome 4 my head. Let’s not take kindness for weakness. Let this giant sleep. I beg u all.”
He also warned: “No one really wants destruction, not even me but I shall destroy if disturbed. On me. Love.”
According to Joe Budden, Wayne later attempted to call Kendrick to iron out their issues but the Compton rapstar did not pick up — prompting the “A Milli” MC to prepare a different response.
“I’m hearing that Wayne went in the booth,” he said in a serious tone.
