While it’s not necessarily the case for every TV show, sometimes a series leaving one streaming service and finding its home on another brings in a whole new batch of fans. A show that once faded in the background could finally become a streaming sensation, for example. Luckily, that’s exactly the case for the 2017 psychological thriller series Absentia, which was once a Prime Video original. Since November 14, 2025, the three-season series has been picked by Netflix in multiple regions, including the US, and has been winning over fans ever since. Currently, the series is #2 in the US, following only the recently released Netflix original The Beast in Me.

What Is ‘Absentia’ About?

Led by Castle star Stana Katic, Absentia follows FBI Special Agent Emily Byrne, who, after being declared dead in “absentia,” is rescued after six years in captivity. With no memory of her time locked away, Emily returns to her old life, eager to reconnect with her family and reclaim her identity. Of course, returning home is far from a string of happy reunions. Her husband, Special Agent Nick Durand (Patrick Heusinger), has since remarried while her son, Flynn (Patrick McAuley), barely remembers her.

As if that isn’t enough, Emily then becomes the prime suspect in a string of murders and is entangled in a new web of crimes that hit disturbingly close to home as she tries to prove her innocence. By Season 2, Emily’s challenges to regain her identity continue, especially when she uncovers a shadowy bio-terror organization experimenting on human subjects, including herself. By Season 3, Emily takes a step back from her role in the FBI and tries to build some semblance of stability and normalcy for her son. That’s right when she faces one of her most personal and violent enemies to date, one that won’t stop at anything to get their revenge, including kidnapping her ex-husband Nick.

Absentia’ Is a Must-Watch for Thriller Fans

Just one year after airing the Season 3 finale on July 17, 2020, Absentia was canceled by Prime Video in May 2021. While there’s no specific date for when the show left the platform, Absentia is finally getting the love it’s always deserved on Netflix. And while the series had a mixed reception from critics, the show was quite well-received by audiences, reaching an average of 77% among viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. Throughout its three seasons, the series garnered praise for its suspenseful storytelling and Katic’s brilliant central performance. After all, the series perfectly balanced unraveling a string of lies and dangerous conspiracies, while telling a heartfelt story of a woman who’s lost, and finding her way back to herself and her family.

For many years, Absentia was an underrated Prime Video gem, serving as one of the streaming service’s best original shows ever. Now, on Netflix, the show is letting go of the underrated title and becoming an all-out streaming hit. With Katic as a flawed yet fearless protagonist, Absentia certainly established itself as a bingeworthy, nail-biting thriller, with interesting characters and engaging storylines that get better season after season. It’s certainly a must-watch, and will hopefully remain in Netflix’s top charts for the near future.
